Awww the sweet sweet Dacks ( that’s Adirondaks for those who haven’t heard that short form before).
So unpredictable and like any mountain range so worth the effort to summit. This past weekend ( Oct 19 2019) we were rewarded with a spectacular hike to the summit of Whiteface Mountain (4687’). We were informed by the cashier at our favorite liquor store in Lake Placid that the top of Whiteface had just received 12″ of snow. Our group of 22 was prepared, mostly to expect ice but weren’t really thinking snow! The road to the top was closed and with that snowfall the locals were hiking up and skiing down the road.
We had a great hike on the trail from the north east side of the mountain off the Memorial highway. Our hike to the top was punctuated with views of changing leaves and snow covered trees at higher elevations. A quick visit on the summit and then descent because some were keen on hiking Esther on the way down. Others choose to take the leisurely but longer hike down the road being passed only by the skiers! By the time we reached the turn off for Esther Mountain it was agreed to return to our vehicles as our day had been perfect and without incident.
What a day!
The following day a smaller group hiked Haystack Mountain. A modest 4 hour up and down hike that provided more great views and no snow.
We ventured back to K-town after another fabulous annual ( now 7 years for me) weekend in the Dacks and asking; “ why don’t we go more often”
Spend a weekend in Dacks, its good for the soul.
